ToggleSunday football looks different now.
For a growing proportion of adult fans in the U.S., the phone on the couch armrest has become part of the broadcast, with odds shifting between snaps and a group chat arguing over a running back’s rushing total before halftime. Two 2026 surveys offer hard numbers on what changes once a wager is attached to a game, and the picture gets messier once you read past the headline figures.
Bets and the Football Week
A single wager can turn a lopsided night game into three hours of close attention. Team storylines play a part too, since a quarterback back from injury or a rookie receiver seeing extra targets gives fans a specific reason to follow one side of the ball.
Platforms have adapted to how people watch. There’s a reason the Betway login page on Betway Zambia’s site opens onto a sportsbook and live betting under one account, with the casino lobby a tab away. Fans checking a line during a stoppage don’t want to hunt through menus.
Why Wagering Heightens Fan Engagement
Optimove Insights surveyed 926 U.S. adults who’d placed an NFL bet last season, and its August 2026 fieldwork found 82% believe wagering increases their enjoyment and engagement with football. Over half called the boost a big one.
Greater engagement usually means closer attention. A fan with a bet on the over will still watch the fourth quarter of a 31-10 blowout, and by Week 6 probably knows the backup tight end’s name.
Player performance came out as the strongest betting driver at 45%. Team loyalty and adding excitement to watching tied on 43%, which suggests the wager adds to the viewing rather than replacing it.
But loyalty still comes first. Nine in ten said they were certain or very likely to bet on a game involving their favorite team.
How Bettors Use Multiple Platforms
Sixty-four percent of those surveyed used at least two betting sites in a season. Sixteen percent used three or more.
Ease of use was the top reason for picking a site, cited by 59%, with easy payouts next at 43%. Clunky apps were also the leading reason to leave one, at 47%.
For multi-site users, comparing access and navigation is part of the week. One app might post player props earlier while another loads faster on patchy stadium Wi-Fi, so fans end up with a folder of sportsbook icons and a rough idea of which one suits which job. And markets count too, since a site with no same-game option for Monday night gets skipped fast.
The Appeal of Detailed Game Outcomes
In February 2026, the Siena Research Institute and St. Bonaventure University’s Jandoli School of Communication polled 3,084 U.S. residents. Their findings placed 22% of Americans in the bettor category, up from 17% in 2024.
Three-quarters of those bettors said they like prop bets.
A prop bet is a wager on a smaller event inside a game that doesn’t decide the result, such as who scores first or how many catches a receiver finishes with. These markets stretch attention past the final score. A Bears fan down 17 at halftime has little reason to stick around for the scoreline, but a bet on the quarterback’s passing yards gives the second half a point.
Brian Moritz, who directs the sports journalism master’s program at the Jandoli School, said fans “have a complicated relationship with sports gambling.” His own poll backs him up, with 53% of respondents now against sportsbook ads during televised games, an odd fit with the love for props.
Informed Betting Choices Online
Before placing a wager, you should check the markets on offer and the account tools, such as deposit limits. Optimove found 81% of bettors set a budget, with weekly limits the most common approach at 41%.
Wager type is the first thing to learn. A moneyline bet is simply a pick of the winner regardless of margin, while a point spread asks a team to win by, or lose by less than, a set number.
Treat a bet a bit like the scientific method: form a view and test it against injury reports, then look at what the result says before changing anything. A player prop tied to a performance you haven’t looked into is closer to guessing.
Football Fandom Across Digital Services
Phones are the delivery system for almost all of this, from the first injury report to the final whistle. Mobile app notifications were the preferred contact method for 53% of Optimove’s respondents.
Fans in 2026 flick between a broadcast and a sportsbook during one drive, usually with a fantasy app open somewhere too, and varied markets fit that habit. Siena’s poll also found 15% of Americans had bet on a sporting event through an event-based prediction market, which widens the menu again.
Multi-site behavior points to a broader expectation of choice. Fans who use two or three platforms aren’t necessarily disloyal, they’ve learned no single app does everything well.
Survey enthusiasm deserves a small discount, mind you. Optimove’s follow-up on the 2025/26 season found 31% had planned to bet live and just 16% did, and stated intentions for 2026/27 could drift in a similar way.
